Sexual desire grows from a lack of need
The second principal focus of desire is sex. Imagine, if you will, a bad film in which some lost traveller limps out of a desert towards a solitary house, crawls up the front steps and croaks out a plea for water; it is quite likely that the householder will give him water and perhaps food as well. The same scenario could not work if the traveller’s demand was, ‘Sex! Or I shall die!’ – except, perhaps in some absurdist context.
The fact is, the sexual drive (the ‘part drive’ whose object is the genitalia) is one with no real need attached to it: one can go through one’s entire life without having sex and remain perfectly healthy. There are perhaps those who would say, ‘but sex is necessary for the continuation of the species’ – yes of course, but this is need at a population level and does not concern the individual, who is also perfectly capable of having sex without procreating. As a drive with an object but no need, the sex drive therefore provides fertile ground for the seeds of desire, as there can be no demand that arises from it that is justifiable with a physical need.
